Diddi Dance Franchise UK – A DANCE teacher has scooped an award for being a top female franchisee.

Charlotte Foxley runs Diddi Dance North Essex and South Suffolk, which hosts dance classes for pre-school age children and those with disabilities, including in Colchester, Lawford and Harwich.

She started her franchise in 2015 and now has a team of six teachers running 20 classes, including those for wheelchair users.

Earlier this month she was announced Woman Franchisee of the Year at the National NatWest EWIF awards in London.

The event aims to celebrate women in the world of business.

Ssangyong celebrates addition of 10 new dealers in six months

Ssangyong Motor UK has celebrated the addition of 10 new dealerships in just six months as part of a “dramatic transformation over the past year”.

The Korean brand now has a franchised retail network of 65 sites and is eyeing continued growth with a target of reaching 90 franchised retail points by the end of 2020.

But Nick Laird, managing director at SsangYong Motors UK, is clearly pleased with how the “dramatic transformation” of the brand’s UK offering is shaping up.

Laird said: “This brand has undergone dramatic transformation over the past year with the implementation of a new growth strategy, the introduction of new, more exciting products, and, with the expected future development we have in mind, the focus on the expansion of our dealer network is of paramount importance to our customers – both existing and prospect.

“At the moment, some of our prospect customers, people who are genuinely interested in our brand and products, tell us that their nearest dealer is too far away from them, and more often than not, it is.

“Our focus on filling open points will help us and our dealers to generate more awareness for SsangYong, give buyers more confidence in the brand and sell more cars.”

SsangYong said in a statement issued today (May 20) that it has an “interesting approach to franchising”.

It claims that its proposition is unique in that it endeavours to change how prospects view operating a new-vehicle franchise by presenting no up-front fees, zero-cost signage, and no charges for special tools or computer diagnostics.

Industry veteran becomes chair of franchise giant as founder retires

The founder of franchise giant Belvoir, Mike Goddard, has now stepped down as chair of the company, two years after quitting as its chief executive officer.

Goddard founded Belvoir with his wife Stephanie in 1995 and at yesterday’s Annual General Meeting of the firm – the last with Goddard as chair – the current chief executive Dorian Gonsalves spoke of the pleasure he had of working with the founder since 2005.

“Through his entrepreneurial spirit and his passion for franchising, Belvoir has become the largest property franchise group in the UK.  I would like to express my personal and the board’s sincere gratitude for all that Mike has done and achieved as founder, chief executive and chairman over the past 24 years” Gonsalves said.

Taking over as chairman from today is industry veteran Michael Stoop, who has 40 years experience in the industry, much of it involved with franchise operations.

During that time he has been managing director of Winkworth, was the head of Xperience (the agency franchising arm of Legal & General), was group managing director at Martin & Co – now named The Property Franchise Group – and is still involved on the board of at least one PropTech company.

Stoop is, in addition, vice-chairman of The Property Ombudsman.

“We welcome as chairman, Michael Stoop, who has over 40 years’ experience of the property franchise sector and has already made a significant contribution since joining the [Belvoir] board in March 2018” says a statement from Dorian Gonsalves.

Theatre school up for leisure award

A DANCE and acting school is a finalist for a lifestyle award. Footlights in Rossendale, a performing arts school, is a finalist for the best Leisure and Culture Venue of 2019 in the Rossendale Lifestyle Awards.

The franchise, led by partners Aaron Doherty and Jack Tudd, only opened 12 months ago, and have become the best franchise of the company in the country.

Hamleys Has a New Owner, But Will the Iconic UK Toy Store Come to the U.S.?

Last fall, not long after FAO Schwarz returned to New York City with a new flagship store, the toy industry was buzzing with news that another icon might be plotting an outpost in the Big Apple —  Hamleys.

A UK staple with a lineage that dates back to 1760 when William Hamley opened “Noah’s Ark” — the retailer was said to be nearing a deal to open a two-story U.S. flagship at 2 Herald Square. At the time, sources said that the deal was expected to close early this year, with a target opening in 2020. Now, Hamleys has a new owner.

Earlier this month, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Brands Ltd. acquired Hamleys Global Holdings Ltd., which operates 167 stores across 18 countries. In India, Reliance has held the master franchise license for the retailer, operating 88 stores in 29 cities.

Baby swim school with roots in New Forest goes national

Baby Squids Franchise UK – A BABY swim school that started in the New Forest has been relaunched as a national franchise after seven very successful years helping more than 5,000 youngsters gain water confidence.

Laura Skilton, a mum herself, now runs Baby Paddlers with her husband Martin from 19 pools across the south, including at Ashurst Lodge in Ashurst and Lymington’s Elmers Court Hotel.

She has now switched the name of the business to Baby Squids, and the school is already gaining interest all over the country.

Laura launched the sessions after feeling frustrated at not being able to find swim classes for her son Harry that created a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

“Following redundancy from my job I decided to set some up,” she said.

The couple, who live in Winchester, now have 24 staff teaching 188 classes per week, but it all started in Ashurst where the first ever session was run by Nadina Robson.

Seven years on, and with a wealth of experience under her belt, Laura is now taking the bold and timely step to launch a national franchise programme.

“I’m so passionate about our business and the unique way we teach swimming,” she said. “I always knew we were going to go national – it was only a matter of time.

“So, after our third child turned one, we knew we had to go for it. It’s been a hard slog for us to get this next step off the ground, a real labour of love, and I’m so proud of what Baby Squids can offer parents, children and local communities.”

Baby Paddlers has been replaced by Baby Squids branding across all on and offline communications and media. But Laura stresses that the business will keep the same ethos.

“We are already talking to a number of people eager to get going,” said Laura. “I can’t wait to see the pins spring up across the UK map as Baby Squids goes nationwide. A real reward for our hard work helping many more children swim across the country.

“It’s not easy launching and running your own business, particularly when you’ve got small kids. But equally, being your own boss means you can make time to be there for the things that matter: the family days, the school pick-ups, the concerts, the sports days.”

Over the years, Laura’s business has supported the community through raising money for charities and organisations like Forest Park School in Totton.

Belvoir Lettings outperforming on all fronts

Belvoir Lettings PLC (LON:BLV), the UK’s largest property franchise, said it is outperforming the three key markets in which it operates.

After a robust first quarter of 2019, the board is confident of meeting market expectations for the full year.

Year-on-year growth of 6.3% in Management Service Fees (MSF) from lettings was well ahead of the reported 1.2% growth in the rental index of 1.2%, while growth of 10.3% from sales MSF compared with a drop of 1.5% in property transactions. Net banking from financial services (on a like-for-like basis) was up 20%.

In the year to date Belvoir’s Assisted Acquisitions programme has supported six franchisees to acquire a local competitor, adding £1.2mln of network revenue, nearly 800 managed properties and over £100,000 a year of recurring MSF.

There are still £2.0ml of deals currently with lawyers and a strong pipeline of further opportunities to underpin the group’s growth target for 2019, Belvoir said.

“The board is very encouraged by trading in Q1 with our franchise model proving that, even in a challenging year for the property market, it has the resilience to overcome and indeed benefit from changes in the sector,” said Dorian Gonsalves, the chief executive officer.

Mike Goddard, Belvoir’s founder and non-executive chairman, is retiring from the board at today’s annual general meeting. He will be succeeded by non-executive director, Michael Stoop.
