Ssangyong celebrates addition of 10 new dealers in six months

May 21, 2019

Ssangyong Motor UK has celebrated the addition of 10 new dealerships in just six months as part of a “dramatic transformation over the past year”.

The Korean brand now has a franchised retail network of 65 sites and is eyeing continued growth with a target of reaching 90 franchised retail points by the end of 2020.

But Nick Laird, managing director at SsangYong Motors UK, is clearly pleased with how the “dramatic transformation” of the brand’s UK offering is shaping up.

Laird said: “This brand has undergone dramatic transformation over the past year with the implementation of a new growth strategy, the introduction of new, more exciting products, and, with the expected future development we have in mind, the focus on the expansion of our dealer network is of paramount importance to our customers – both existing and prospect.

“At the moment, some of our prospect customers, people who are genuinely interested in our brand and products, tell us that their nearest dealer is too far away from them, and more often than not, it is.

“Our focus on filling open points will help us and our dealers to generate more awareness for SsangYong, give buyers more confidence in the brand and sell more cars.”

SsangYong said in a statement issued today (May 20) that it has an “interesting approach to franchising”.

It claims that its proposition is unique in that it endeavours to change how prospects view operating a new-vehicle franchise by presenting no up-front fees, zero-cost signage, and no charges for special tools or computer diagnostics.

The 10 new retail operations which have embraced the approach to become Ssangyong Motor UK franchised retailers during the past six months are:

NT Shaw of Louth

Haven Motors, Horsham

Dales Automotive, Barnoldswick

Bassetts SsangYong, Swansea

DS Dalgleish, Coldstream

Seeker SsangYong, Chesterfield

Brenwood SsangYong, Kirkaldy

Platinum SsangYong, Frome

Rowcliffe SsangYong, Bridgewater

Oakwood SsangYong, Tyneside

Dave Rose, head of franchising for SsangYong Motors UK, said: “We want to make it easy for dealers to join our franchise, so we’ve removed unnecessary barriers.

Related: Automotive Franchises – Search Franchise Reviews Directory

“We’ve created new roles within our franchising team to support our growing network and the number of inbound enquiries that we have received from prospect dealers.

“To have introduced 10 new dealers in less than 6 months is an incredible achievement, and we have big plans in place to develop the network even further over the next 12 months – if we can add another 10 dealers to the network this year, we will be absolutely delighted.”

SsangYong Motors UK appointed Ian Wilson as dealer recruitment manager to oversee the growth of the brand’s dealer network last month.

He will be based in Scotland but will be responsible for securing new partners nationally.

Rose added: “In a nutshell, the priority is, and has been, to provide the right elements that form strong dealer partnerships, improve franchisee profitability and promote growth for both the dealer network and for SsangYong Motors UK.”

Michelle and Andy – Case Study

May 19, 2019

LEADING THE WAY … TO A FANTASTIC WORK/LIFE BALANCE

A surprise phone call following a chance meeting with OSCAR Pet Foods’ behaviourist, Shelley Audis-Riddell, BSc (Hons) MSc, turned Andy and Michelle’s lives around. After attending “by far the best puppy classes you could ever imagine” Michelle’s love of animals and Shelley’s inspirational knowledge of pet behaviour sowed the seeds for a pioneering new franchise opportunity.

‘OSCAR Pet Foods, the UK’s largest pet food home delivery franchise were launching a new business to support pet ownership – would I be interested in running their pilot franchise?

‘Fed up with exhausting and financially unrewarding jobs, my husband and I were properly stuck in a bubble of negativity.

Related: Pet Franchises in the UK – Turn Your Passion into a Business

‘Here was an opportunity to work flexibly, at my own pace, around precious family commitments, whilst indulging my life-long love of animals and enjoying a steady income from the rapidly expanding pet industry.

‘As my Leading the Way business picked up I asked my husband, Andy, to step in to help with some of the dog walking. As a trained dog groomer in his spare time, I had an inkling that he would turn out to be a great asset to the business. In fact, Andy’s naturally high standards and calm temperament turned out to be perfect. So much so, that before long he decided to leave his previous employment and join the business full time. He’s never looked back.

‘It’s great being out every day experiencing the changing seasons. We’ve learned to listen out for the beautiful call of a buzzard and enjoy seeing the countryside at its very best; with the added benefit of staying incredibly fit!

‘Shelley’s knowledge has given our business not only the expertise it requires but also the edge of professionalism that it deserves.

‘The CERTA Accreditation delivers certainty when it comes to knowing that we offer the highest standards in the industry – nothing is left to chance.

‘One of the greatest joys we have each day is looking back with happiness at how far this franchise opportunity has turned our lives around.

‘We could not be happier with our new-found life/work balance.’

“Leading the Way support has been outstanding, going above and beyond. We have never experienced this kind of commitment, helping us through the early challenges of starting a new business with no previous experience.”

Exciting new launch of enhanced pet food

May 19, 2019

There has never been a better time to look at franchise opportunities with OSCAR with their exciting new launch of enhanced pet food, which places OSCAR at the height of nutritional excellence!

Pet care lies at the heart of everything we do, and, here at OSCAR Pet Foods, we are in the fortunate position of being able to update our foods with the latest scientific developments in pet nutrition.

Saying ‘thank you’ for the unconditional love that dogs bring into our lives isn’t easy but giving dogs the absolute best when it comes to nutrition is a perfect place to start!

We understand that dogs need different nutritional benefits at different stages of their lives. With this in mind, we’ve added special touches to our ‘Complete’ dog food range from Puppy Complete through to Adult Care Senior.

We want your dog’s tail wagging with delight at every bowl of OSCAR, so, as well as enhancing taste and flavour, we’ve eased digestion by including less-allergenic and highly digestible ingredients such as Hydrolysed Protein and Chicory.

Related: Pet Franchises in the UK – Turn Your Passion into a Business

Keeping dogs active and happy in their senior years is something every dog owner wants. We understand that well-balanced nutrition can help support joint care. That’s why we’ve added MSM and Chondroitin to some of our adult diets to maintain healthy joint tissues.

Alongside taste and vitality, OSCAR know that dental care is just as important. Cleaning your dog’s teeth can be difficult; it is estimated that 80% of dogs under the age of 3 years have dental issues. To help improve your dog’s dental health, we’ve added ‘Stay Clean’ (Stay-C®50 – from Vitamin C) to some of our adult diets. ‘Stay Clean’ acts on saliva to help remove plaque and reduce tartar build up – acting as a preventative treatment to tackle dental hygiene before the senior time in life.

Experts at delivering the energy and bounce that every dog deserves, we’ve also added herbs, fruits and vegetables (including parsley, spinach, and pomegranate) to support general health and well-being from head to tail. Our newly enhanced recipes are everything a dog could wish for.

It’s not just our foods that have been enhanced! Making OSCAR’s nutritional excellence even more appealing is our company’s clear commitment to honesty when it comes to labelling ingredients. Hand on heart, we tell pet owners exactly what is in their pet’s food; our OSCAR Honest Label has been reassuring customers for over 25 years.

With an estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic waste entering our oceans each year, OSCAR take every step to avoid unnecessary packaging.

Repurposing existing bags with stickers means saving packaging whilst maintaining an Honest Label – it’s the OSCAR way: caring for you, caring for your pet and caring for your environment.

Hamleys Has a New Owner, But Will the Iconic UK Toy Store Come to the U.S.?

May 19, 2019

Last fall, not long after FAO Schwarz returned to New York City with a new flagship store, the toy industry was buzzing with news that another icon might be plotting an outpost in the Big Apple —  Hamleys.

A UK staple with a lineage that dates back to 1760 when William Hamley opened “Noah’s Ark” — the retailer was said to be nearing a deal to open a two-story U.S. flagship at 2 Herald Square. At the time, sources said that the deal was expected to close early this year, with a target opening in 2020. Now, Hamleys has a new owner.

Related: Retail Franchise UK – Should You Buy UK Retail Franchises?

Earlier this month, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Brands Ltd. acquired Hamleys Global Holdings Ltd., which operates 167 stores across 18 countries. In India, Reliance has held the master franchise license for the retailer, operating 88 stores in 29 cities.

“Over the last few years, we have built a very significant and profitable business in toy retailing under the Hamleys brand in India,” says Darshan Mehta, president and CEO of Reliance Brands. “The 250-year-old English toy retailer pioneered the concept of experimental retailing, decades before the concept of creating unique experiences in brick and mortar retailing became the new norm. The worldwide acquisition of the iconic Hamleys brand and business places Reliance into the frontline of global retail. Personally, it is a long-cherished dream come true.”

As Reliance takes charge with ambitions of becoming a global player in toy retailing, it remains to be seen if Hamleys’ Herald Square project will move forward. The company already has a North American presence with several stores in Mexico. Will the U.S. and Canada be next?

Baby swim school with roots in New Forest goes national

May 19, 2019

Baby Squids Franchise UK – A BABY swim school that started in the New Forest has been relaunched as a national franchise after seven very successful years helping more than 5,000 youngsters gain water confidence.

Laura Skilton, a mum herself, now runs Baby Paddlers with her husband Martin from 19 pools across the south, including at Ashurst Lodge in Ashurst and Lymington’s Elmers Court Hotel.

She has now switched the name of the business to Baby Squids, and the school is already gaining interest all over the country.

Laura launched the sessions after feeling frustrated at not being able to find swim classes for her son Harry that created a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

“Following redundancy from my job I decided to set some up,” she said.

The couple, who live in Winchester, now have 24 staff teaching 188 classes per week, but it all started in Ashurst where the first ever session was run by Nadina Robson.

Seven years on, and with a wealth of experience under her belt, Laura is now taking the bold and timely step to launch a national franchise programme.

“I’m so passionate about our business and the unique way we teach swimming,” she said. “I always knew we were going to go national – it was only a matter of time.

“So, after our third child turned one, we knew we had to go for it. It’s been a hard slog for us to get this next step off the ground, a real labour of love, and I’m so proud of what Baby Squids can offer parents, children and local communities.”

Baby Paddlers has been replaced by Baby Squids branding across all on and offline communications and media. But Laura stresses that the business will keep the same ethos.

Related: Children Franchises – Search Franchise Reviews Directory

“We are already talking to a number of people eager to get going,” said Laura. “I can’t wait to see the pins spring up across the UK map as Baby Squids goes nationwide. A real reward for our hard work helping many more children swim across the country.

“It’s not easy launching and running your own business, particularly when you’ve got small kids. But equally, being your own boss means you can make time to be there for the things that matter: the family days, the school pick-ups, the concerts, the sports days.”

Over the years, Laura’s business has supported the community through raising money for charities and organisations like Forest Park School in Totton.

Two chances to buy a Subway franchise in a Devon seaside resort

May 18, 2019

If you just can’t resist the lure of a freshly made sandwich, packs with your favourite fillings, sauces and pickles, here are two exciting chances to buy your very own Subway franchise in a Devon seaside resort.

Available as a going concern business, Subway in Ilfracombe is in a prominent trading location on the High Street.

The double-fronted shop unit is available with the current Subway fit out as well as trade inventory to start taking money the first day a new owner takes over.

The store offers table and chair seating for about 20 covers while also having the Subway fit-out servery counter and rear preparation areas, including a walk-in chiller.

The last couple of years have provided turnovers of between £180,000 and £200,000 with an annual rent of £9,000 per annum as well as the property being eligible for small business rates relief.

It is thought the business is ideal for an owner occupier or partnership to operate the business and reduce the requirement for high staffing costs.

Having such a franchise offers the best of both worlds – you could have an established business in which you are your own boss while also having the backup, help and marketing from an international company.

The business is available with a quoting premium of £44,950 which includes the goodwill of the business and a trade inventory of fixtures, fittings and equipment.

Further details can be obtained from JD Commercial who can be contacted on 01237 424053.

If you would prefer to sell delicious sandwiches in South Devon, a Subway franchise in the seaside town of Teignmouth has just gone on sale.

Award winning licence and leisure commercial agents Bettesworths is delighted to be marketing the well-located unit which is available fully-equipped.

With spacious internal seating for 22 and external seating for 16, Subway Teignmouth has built a solid customer base with opening hours of 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. However, these hours could be extended should the next operator choose to.

This valuable franchise agreement is fully supported by Subway who, for a percentage of the weekly turnover, provides all the national and international advertising. An elected board also negotiates on your behalf with suppliers to agree the best possible prices.

Prospective franchisees will have to be approved by The Reginal Business Development Agent. Any potential buyer will be required to go through the process of passing the Wonderlic test, UoS courses, 40 hours of in-store training before attending and passing franchisee training.

This ground floor lock-up unit is available via assignment of the current sub lease with circa four years left to run. The rent is £25,000 per annum and the tenant has repairing and insuring obligations.

The Head Lease is protected by the 1954 Landlord & Tenant Act providing the tenant with rights to renew at the end of the term.

“Should an operator wish to start up a new site the initial outlay is as much as £150,000. I therefore expect there to be keen interest from the start.”

Belvoir Lettings outperforming on all fronts

May 18, 2019

Belvoir Lettings PLC (LON:BLV), the UK’s largest property franchise, said it is outperforming the three key markets in which it operates.

After a robust first quarter of 2019, the board is confident of meeting market expectations for the full year.

Year-on-year growth of 6.3% in Management Service Fees (MSF) from lettings was well ahead of the reported 1.2% growth in the rental index of 1.2%, while growth of 10.3% from sales MSF compared with a drop of 1.5% in property transactions. Net banking from financial services (on a like-for-like basis) was up 20%.

In the year to date Belvoir’s Assisted Acquisitions programme has supported six franchisees to acquire a local competitor, adding £1.2mln of network revenue, nearly 800 managed properties and over £100,000 a year of recurring MSF.

There are still £2.0ml of deals currently with lawyers and a strong pipeline of further opportunities to underpin the group’s growth target for 2019, Belvoir said.

“The board is very encouraged by trading in Q1 with our franchise model proving that, even in a challenging year for the property market, it has the resilience to overcome and indeed benefit from changes in the sector,” said Dorian Gonsalves, the chief executive officer.

Mike Goddard, Belvoir’s founder and non-executive chairman, is retiring from the board at today’s annual general meeting. He will be succeeded by non-executive director, Michael Stoop.

“Through his entrepreneurial spirit and his passion for franchising, Belvoir has become the largest property franchise group in the UK. I would like to express my personal and the board’s sincere gratitude for all that Mike has done and achieved as founder, CEO and chairman over the past 24 years,” Gonsalves said.
