German Doner Kebab opening first Toronto location

German Doner Kebab will open a flagship restaurant in downtown Toronto, expanding it growth in Canada, according to a company press release.

Located at 246 Queen St. W., the restaurant opens next week, following the launch of its first two Canadian restaurants in Ottawa and Surrey last year. The restaurant will have a capacity of 40 seats and will create 30 jobs in the Toronto area.

The restaurant’s kebabs are made using lean meats and fresh local vegetables, served in handmade toasted breads with signature sauces, according to the release.

The downtown Toronto location has been developed in partnership with franchisee Usman Ali, who is planning to develop 10 German Doner Kebabs throughout Canada in the next 10 years. Ali’s family has owns eight Popeyes and four Dairy Queen sites.

“The location doesn’t get any better, it’s in the heart of downtown. Period,” Ali said in the press release. “This amazing location will enable German Doner Kebab to bring its unique experience to the people of Toronto. “German Doner Kebab brings a compelling customer experience and a strong product. The experience of its leadership team is unrivalled too and we are looking forward to working closely with them to open in Downtown Toronto and developing our pipeline into the Toronto area.”

The brand has over 70 restaurants across the globe and is embarking on growth across the U.K., Sweden, U.S. and the Middle East, with over 700 franchises signed-up to its global growth strategy.

Based in Glasgow, Scotland, but started in Berlin, Germany in 1989, the brand has grown quickly in the U.K., Sweden and Middle East and hitting markets in the U.S., Canada, Saudi Arabia and Europe. The fast-casual brand plans to open 47 new restaurants in the U.K. in 2021.

‘Right at Home saved my life’: Hertfordshire franchise rated Outstanding after first inspection

A Right at Home franchise based in Hertfordshire has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its first inspection.

Right at Home Borehamwood & Watford, which registered with the CQC in March 2019, was rated ‘Outstanding’ in three out of five inspection areas – Caring, Responsive and Well-led – and ‘Good’ for Safe and Effective.

According to the CQC report, one of the key strengths of the service was the commitment from management and the rest of the team to ensuring people continued to live fulfilling lives in their own homes.

It also noted that there was joint effort made by staff and management to continually look for ways to develop and improve the service,

Matthew Jenkins, CQC head of inspection for adult social care in the central region, said: “Our inspectors were extremely impressed by the level of support Right at Home Borehamwood and Watford offered the people in its care.

“From the moment people joined the service, there was great commitment to ensure they continued to lead fulfilling lives in their own homes. Effective and strong leaders ensured people received an extremely personalised service that took into account their hobbies, preferences and life goals.

“Throughout our inspection, staff demonstrated a non-judgemental and supportive approach towards people which had a significant impact on people who previously struggled to find the right support.

“People told us the help and support they were getting was invaluable and meant they could enjoy life in their own home safely and worry free. Relatives also gave positive feedback about how caring all staff at the service were.”

One person wrote to the CQC to express their gratitude to the service. They wrote: “Since Right at Home started in January it’s changed my life. When they started, I was bed bound and I hadn’t got out of bed since June 2020, within a few days the carers had me out of bed and walking bit by bit.

“The difference being able to walk again has made to my life is tremendous, it’s given me hope. I was so down and depressed before and now I’ve got a new lease of life. Right at Home has helped me enormously with getting on with my life and regained my relationship with my husband and assisted us in becoming husband and wife again.”

Century 21 UK named as UK’s best property and estate agency franchise

Century 21 UK has been ranked at number 18 in the 2021 franchise industry league table, jumping 33 places from 2020 and the top property company.

Century 21 UK has been ranked at number 18 in the 2021 league table, jumping 33 places from 2020 and the top property company.

The accolade comes as part of independent research by franchise B2B website.

Each year the site publishes its list of the Top 100 Franchises in the UK based on research into key areas of business performance, including stability and growth, revenue, market expansion and social responsibility.

Century 21 UK ranked at number 18 in the 2021 league table, jumping 33 places from 2020. With the top three being McDonald’s, Autosmart and Domino’s, Century 21 UK is the only property and estate agency franchise to fall within the top 80.

In the past 12 months, Century 21 UK launched three new business models to better support those impacted by Covid-19. The Solo model is designed to allow self-employed agents to work from home and share territories with other agents. Finally, Century 21 Max follows the more traditional model of high-street estate agency franchising.

One Stop to open over 100 franchise stores this financial year

One Stop is set to open over 100 franchise stores in the current financial year.

The Tesco-owned retailer told The Grocer it has opened 22 franchises since the beginning of the financial year in March. It has plans in place for a further 37 openings over the next four months and is also in discussion with more than 50 retailers.

The franchise arm currently comprises of 222 sites.

In April One Stop promoted former franchise operations controller, Matt Elliott, to national recruitment manager to drive its franchise business.

Elliott heads up a new team of five retail experts that work across different regions of the UK so the business can recruit and explore new opportunities quicker.

One Stop said it is now interviewing for two more candidates to add to the team for the north east and Bristol areas.

“We’ve seen a significant uplift in interest in the One Stop brand and their job is to handle that,” said One Stop head of franchise John Miller.

“But we’ve got to be confident it’s the right demographic, it fits the model, and that the retailers’ expectations are met. Our mantra is: ’right store, right retailer’.”

The business had recently made a “substantial investment” into relaunching its website over a four-month period since November, as well as to boost its social media marketing.

This has triggered a 400% increase in web traffic since the start of the year, and a 250% rise in enquiries in June compared to last year.

“With that coming through, we needed a team of people to manage all this extra activity that it’s driving,” added Miller.

“One Stop works well in a low to mid demographic, suburban, housing estate. But we’re also opening stores in some more high street locations. We just opened a city centre store in Hull.”

Miller added that “cold start” sites had also become a strong area for franchise.

“Over the past year, we’ve seen a growing number of stores we’re opening from empty sites. Whether that’s a retailer that’s acquired an empty site, or a retailer we’ve got that’s looking for more sites.”

This included the former Mole Valley Farmers site, in Bridgend, Wales, that was transformed into a 2,900 sq ft store by One Stop franchisee Paul Thomas.

This was Thomas’ second site with One Stop, which has traded over £40,000 a week since opening on 26 February.

“As we emerge from Covid, I think there’s a real confidence in the convenience industry, and a resilience where people are excited to invest more money, more time and more effort into it,” said Miller.

New TaxAssist Accountants shop in Inverurie

Steven Mearns and Cameron Allan have opened their third shop at 25 West High Street in Inverurie, which will operate alongside their shops in Aberdeen and Banchory.

Inverurie has recently seen an influx of new businesses – a new TaxAssist Accountants shop included – meaning, according to Grampian Online, that “there are more firms trading than there were prior to start of the pandemic last year”.

Co-op eyeing 40 franchise stores by the end of the year

The Co-op is set to take its franchise estate to almost 40 stores by the end of the year, well ahead of its original target.

The convenience retailer said in March that it wanted to double the number of franchise stores to 30 by the end of 2021. However, it has already reached 28 stores and has plans to open a further 11 in the next few months.

Co-op opened 14 franchise stores over an 11-week period from mid-March.

The franchise estate covers a range of store types and locations spanning community neighbourhoods, city centres, university campuses and petrol forecourts, as well as its first service station, which opened in March.

Its seventh university franchise store, in Keele, is set to open in September.

Franchise Theatre School Congratulates Scholarship Winners

The world may have been put on hold but that hasn’t stopped children and young people dreaming of their futures. For those with a passion for performing arts, Razzamataz, a national theatre school network has helped keep those dreams alive with a prestigious scholarship worth up to £855 per student.

Over the last few months, all of the part-time franchises in the Razzamataz Theatre School network have worked alongside the prestigious newspaper for the performing arts industry The Stage. Together, they have created an exciting scholarship opportunity for children and young people across the UK. The network are offering thousands of pounds worth of free tuition, something which means a great deal to many families trying to support their kids.

“We are so proud to once again offer these prestigious scholarships in association with The Stage newspaper,” says Denise Hutton Gosney, MD and Founder of Razzamataz Theatre Schools. “It’s been particularly challenging for business with all the lockdowns but we were all determined that our students and young people in the community would not miss out on this wonderful opportunity. Although the impact of Covid has hit small businesses like ours very hard, we collectively felt that it was important to continue to offer as many opportunities as possible to support young people who have had to show incredible resilience over the last year and a half. A huge congratulations to all of our scholarship winners and we are delighted to welcome lots of new students to the Razzamataz Family.”

The scholarships were open to all young people between the ages of 6-18. Both current Razzamataz students and those that haven’t had any formal training were eligible to apply. For young people who have had to continue their practice at home while in lockdown or isolating, they have shown a huge amount of drive and determination.

“The performing arts is wonderful but competitive career but our students have proved that they have the resilience to work their way through the difficult times,” adds Denise. “For children who have never had any training before, we are so delighted to welcome them to Razzamataz and the excellent training that our schools offer. We know what a positive impact that the performing arts can offer all children so we are so pleased that our franchisees have continued this exceptional offer.”

Former Razzamataz scholarship students have gone on to be successful in many West End shows including Hamilton, &Juliet, Matilda, School of Rock and many TV shows as well as a starring in a Disney movie.

As well as the financial incentives, the auditions gave students something positive to look forward to. Performing arts professionals across the UK helped to make the difficult judging decisions, giving students the opportunity to stretch themselves and aim high.

Razzamataz Theatre Schools teach thousands of children. With more than 20 years’ experience, the Principals have seen first-hand how performing arts can transform young people’s lives. With the focus now firmly on children’s physical and mental health, there is more demand than ever before for the Razzamataz classes.

The lockdowns have really shined a light on the fact that more needs to be done in these areas so we are really delighted to be part of the movement to promote the arts.”

Although for much of the last 18 months, the schools have been closed or operating with restrictions, that hasn’t stopped new franchisees from joining the network. So far in 2021, five new schools have joined the Dragons’ Den backed franchise with many existing franchisees growing their original territory.

The new franchisees join the ten new Principals who joined the network in 2020. Even during the pandemic, Razzamataz was able to continue to grow the network and continue the high level of support and training.

Franchise Brands posts record sales at Metro Rod

Franchise Brands PLC (LON:FRAN) said its drainage solutions division Metro Rod has posted record sales for the six months to 30 June.

System sales at the B2B division increased by 21% compared with 2020 and 17% compared with 2019 to £23.8mln, with June in particular surging £4.3mln, up 41% from last year and 26% from 2019.

The wider group has benefited from the easing of lockdown restrictions across the UK.

Willow Pumps, which was acquired in October 2019, has greater exposure to hospitality and was more impacted by lockdown, but invoiced sales were up 9% compared with 2020.

The franchise business said Willow Pumps continues to facilitate the growth of pump-related work within Metro Rod, where pumps system sales have jumped 159% to £700,000.

The B2C division has also performed strongly, and 40 new franchisees have been recruited taking the number of B2C franchisees to 393, the AIM-listed company said.

It added that it should deliver a full-year performance at least in line with market expectations.
