Pet taxi franchise is going places

A pet taxi service has been shortlisted for the Encouraging Women Into Franchising Awards 2021.

Pets 2 Places is the first pet taxi franchise to become a member of Encouraging Women Into Franchising (EWIF), whose awards are sponsored by Natwest and recognise both franchisors and franchisees.

The taxi service is a finalist in the New Woman Franchisor of the Year category.

Claire Harris, founder of Pets 2 Places, says she created the business model to prove there is a place in the business world for pet firms.

“I really feel that as a woman, running a pet business from home, people often dismiss what I do as a hobby business. This business is far from a hobby, it takes hard work and dedication and the rewards are fantastic – this is a career and deserves to be taken seriously.”

Pets 2 Places joined EWIF on a mission to see more women starting their own business and holding CEO, managing director and business owner positions.

Claire said: “I started Pets 2 Places in my hometown of Milton Keynes in 2014 and it has become bigger than I ever imagined. It’s been so well received by both customers and other pet businesses, it’s really spurred me on to create this opportunity for other women.”

Pets 2 Places takes pets and their owners to places such as the vets, groomers, kennels and even on holiday. Wherever the customer wants to go and whatever support the owner needs themselves, nothing is too much trouble for Pets 2 Places.

“I love getting to know my customers, and seeing them all the time means we have built such a lovely rapport, they have become like my extended family,” said Claire. “Every day I am called an angel and told what a godsend I am. It is incredibly rewarding and humbling to receive such fantastic feedback from customers on a daily basis.”


Claire added that Pets 2 Place’s is the UK’s first pet taxi franchise and currently has very few competitors. When combined with evidence of one in two households owning a pet, she says the market is strong and the opportunity to build a robust customer base is easy to see.

Clare said: ‘The franchise opportunities I have created aren’t for everyone. We are looking for people who have either worked in the animal community before, in a caring capacity, such as the NHS or with elderly or people with learning difficulties, and they MUST be animal lovers.

Wendy’s plans 20 UK sites as it prepares for nationwide rollout

US burger chain Wendy’s is ‘on track’ to begin opening restaurants in the UK in the coming months, with five sites expected to launch before the end of the year.

During a conference call yesterday (3 March), the group’s directors set out a plan to rollout the chain across the country with an aim of eventually reaching 20 company-owned sites.

Multiple locations have already been secured, with the chain also engaging with several potential franchise candidates to build the estate alongside corporate locations.

“We continue to make great progress towards our plan to expand into Europe and remain on track to begin opening restaurants in the UK in the first half of 2021,” said Wendy’s chief executive Todd Penegor.

“We have built a top talent team on the ground, have multiple locations secured and are engaging with several potential franchise candidates to build out this market alongside us.

“International expansion remains critical to growing our Wendy’s footprint, and we believe that we have the plans and the partners in place to make this happen.”

Wendy’s has already confirmed that it plans to launch restaurants in Reading and Oxford​ in the coming months, marking the group’s first openings in the UK since it pulled out of the market 21 years ago.

It is also exploring additional opportunities in the London area.

The chain previously operated around 10 restaurants across the UK, including high-profile sites on Shaftesbury Avenue – which is now occupied by McDonald’s – and Oxford Circus.

However, it made the decision to leave in 2000, surrendering its leases in order to concentrate on its domestic North American market.

“We’ll get about five company restaurants open in the UK in 2021,” added Penegor.

“We’re actively recruiting franchisees to build out that market along with us. We’ll continue to build company units into 2022 and supplement that with the franchisees that we’re recruiting to grow that market out.

“And that’s a couple of year journey to really start to solidify a good beachhead in the UK to really prove out the model for the broader European business.”

Founded in Ohio in 1969, Wendy’s has more than 6,700 outlets in 30 countries around the world.

Creams dessert café identifies key areas ripe for development

Creams, the dessert café brand, reports that it is seeking further franchisees nationwide to expand its current network from 91 outlets. The company has identified key development areas which include The Midlands, Yorkshire, North East, North West and Scotland.

The company says its tried-and-tested operation, with its own gelato factory and production site, provides franchisees with a national supply chain, economies of scale, and a flexible retail format to fit any location.

Creams will offer franchisees a choice of three distinct store models – Creams Restaurant (1,400 sq.ft. +) in high street and retail park locations, Kiosk (800 sq.ft. +) smaller cafés in high footfall areas and Pop-Up (500 sq.ft. +) for service stations, transport hubs and shopping centres.

The company explains that franchisees will be fully assisted throughout the entire set-up process from build, fixtures, fittings and equipment through to training and help with recruitment. Franchisees will also be designated an Area Support Manager for ongoing guidance along with additional support from its new product development, marketing and public relations teams.

Creams cafés offer customers a wide range of freshly prepared desserts ranging from waffles and crêpes to puddings and sundaes. The company has also introduced a doughnut range and a new savoury option of popcorn chicken waffle bites. All desserts, many of which can be made vegan, feature Creams’ own gelato, which is produced daily in East London.

In 2020 Creams said that it served more than five million customers and was recognised as one of the top 10 brands in The Top 100 Most Loved Eating Out (and Dining In) Brands 2020 by the research company, Savanta.

Dunkin’ Donuts to open second Sheffield doughnut shop on Ecclesall Road THIS WEEK

There’s good news for anyone with a sweet tooth as a second Dunkin’ Donuts doughnut and coffee shop opens in Sheffield this week.

The city’s latest branch of the American fast food chain will open at the Berkeley Precinct on Ecclesall Road from 7am on Tuesday for takeaway and delivery.

It will be located next to KFC following a shop refit and will serve customers from 7am to 8pm seven days a week.

Sheffield already has one Dunkin’ Donuts shop on Devonshire Street, with a franchise also located at Fox Valley Shopping Park in Stocksbridge.

A company spokesperson said the world-famous doughnut chain, which launched in 1950 in Massachusetts, is rapidly expanding across the UK.

The Ecclesall Road store is the fifth to have opened nationally since November and the eleventh since the start of the first lockdown in March 2020.

Ovenu sponsors a guide dog puppy named Selsey

The oven valeting franchise Ovenu is supporting the Guide Dogs charity by gifting it £10,000 to sponsor a black Labrador puppy named Selsey. The company says that more than 100 of its franchisees across the UK have contributed to the initiative over the past couple of years, together with staff at its Wokingham headquarters.

In addition to the initial contribution, Ovenu founder and managing director Rik Hellewell, has pledged that the franchise will donate a further £5,000 to the charity over the next year or so to fund Selsey’s upkeep and guide dog training.

Hellewell said: “We know charities’ incomes have been hit hard by the pandemic and everyone at Ovenu wanted to do something positive to make a difference.”

Having suggested the Guide Dogs charity and its puppy sponsorship scheme, which helps those living in the UK with sight loss, Hellewell chose to name the puppy Selsey, in tribute to his late father-in-law who had strong ties to the seaside town.

Hellewell continued: “My love and support for the Guide Dogs dates to my late teens, when I worked in a pub opposite the charity’s headquarters in Wokingham. I used to see a lot of the handlers and trainers with the dogs, and sometimes they brought them into the pub to familiarise them with groups of people and the noise. Everyone here at Ovenu is eager to see Selsey progress and look forward to the moment she is able to transform someone’s life.”

Victoria Noyce-Guthrie of Guide Dogs, said: “We rely on donations and this kind support will allow us to make a life changing difference to someone with sight loss by providing a guide dog. We hope that during these difficult times the news of Selsey being born and the ‘pupdates’ about her training journey will be something positive that Ovenu and its clients throughout the UK can look forward to.”

Commenting on current business trading during the pandemic, Hellewell said: “Our franchisees have been reporting brisk business as more people are staying at home and are spending more time cooking and baking – so their services are in demand.

German Doner Kebab to open 47 new restaurants in the UK by the end of this year

Fast casual brand German Doner Kebab has announced it is on track to open 47 new restaurants in the UK by the end of 2021, almost doubling its portfolio.

German Doner Kebab has seen UK total sales in 2020 increase 81% from the previous 12 months and opened 12 restaurants last year. Same-store sales for 2020 were also up 51% on 2019.

Key locations in the expansion will include Manchester, Newcastle, Blackburn, Huddersfield, Stockport, Stirling and additional sites in London and Glasgow. Rich Collie, who joined from Nando’s as head of project management, will manage the build-out of the expansion plans.

GDK employs 1,500 people in the UK, with a development pipeline of 350 franchise units over the next seven years.

The brand will forge ahead with international growth in 2021 with sites planned for Canada and US following the launch of its first restaurant in Ottawa. Further growth is also set to be announced for Ireland and Spain, as well as Saudi Arabia.

Right at Home shortlisted for four Encouraging Women into Franchising awards

Right at Home UK has received four nominations for this year’s NatWest Encouraging Women into Franchising (EWiF) Awards.

The home care provider has announced that its chief operating office Lucy Campbell has been shortlisted for Woman Franchisor of the Year, having also won the coveted accolade in 2020.

Meanwhile, Sam Wright, managing director and franchise owner of Right at Home High Wycombe and District, is shortlisted in the Woman Franchisee of the Year category.

Wright opened Right at Home High Wycombe and District in July 2017 and less than two years later, it was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in its first full inspection.

In addition, National People and Brand Development manager, Heather Keep, who is responsible for Right at Home’s marketing, training and recruitment offering, is shortlisted in the Woman Franchise Employee of the Year category alongside Susie Long, registered manager of Right at Home High Wycombe and District.

The news follows the announcement that Right at Home won its fourth Best Franchise Award last week.

Dental problems aren’t usually noticed until an animal is in a lot of pain, which is why it is important to have regular checks with your veterinary practice. Early signs of dental disease may include:

  • Buildup of plaque and tartar

Teeth Brushing

The key to management of dental disease is prevention, and it is possible to brush your dog’s and cat’s teeth, especially if trained from a young age.

Consider your pet’s temperament before attempting to brush their teeth in case they are uncomfortable with having their mouth handled.

  • Begin with gentle handling (if tolerated) around the mouth, teeth and gums. Reward with lots of fuss and praise for a positive experience.
  • Once comfortable with gentle handling, begin touching the teeth with your fingers and add dog and cat toothpaste for your pet to lick.
  • Do NOT use human toothpaste as this can be toxic to your pet.
  • Introduce a toothbrush with the paste on and allow your pet to lick the toothbrush. It takes a few days for them to get used to this.

Once your pet is feeling more comfortable you can begin to brush. Start with the side teeth first and then move to the rest of the teeth as they gain confidence. This may take several days.OSCAR Pet Foods
