A former police officer and clinical sales manager has opened a new Caremark branch in South Birmingham.

Herkesh Malhi, from Quinton, volunteered as a Special Constable for over than 12 years whilst also working for various organisations specialising in medical solutions for people living with hypertenstion, respiratory and wound healing problems.

Due to family commitments, he gave up his role in the police force last year, a move which led him longing for new ways to support the community.

“I took a lot of personal satisfaction from supporting the community in this way so when I had to leave that role I found that there was a void in my life. I was no longer able to make a positive impact in the area I had grown up in, so I looked into other ways I could give back locally,” Malhi said.

“There’s a real need for quality in-home support across south Birmingham so launching a business entirely committed to caring for people in the comfort and familiarity of their homes,  and promoting their independence, became my sole focus.”

Caremark South Birmingham was awarded its CQC registration on March 14, 2019, and the service will provide personalised care for people living in Edgbaston, Harborne, Quinton, Selly Oak, Mosely and the surrounding areas.

Malhi has recently enlisted the support of registered care manager, Claire Gray, who brings 25 years of home care experience to the role.

“I’m really excited to have Claire on board,” said Malhi. “I went through a strict vetting process to ensure my office team and care workers are truly committed to the responsibility they will hold in the community. Claire is a wonderful addition to the team and we are keen to work with people who see health and social care as a vocation and may be looking to work their way up the career ladder.”

Malhi continued: “Whilst I’m looking to build a profitable business and a legacy for my family’s future, it’s my drive to make a difference locally which really instigated the launch of the company. Keeping people in their homes is, obviously, a big part of the vision but I’d also like to work towards reintroducing the more house-bound clients into the community again. This, on top of plans to contribute funds and resources to local charitable organisations, will form part of my community outreach programme for the rest of the year.”

The owner’s growing team of care workers will be trained by an in-house specialist, with all programmes approved and accredited by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management.

As well as managing the launch of his new in-home care business, Malhi continues to volunteer, regularly speaking with people in the community about issues affecting them on a daily basis.
