Camile Thai Kitchen has strengthened its executive board

February 15, 2021

Camile Thai Kitchen, the UK and Ireland Thai food chain, has made moves to strengthen its executive board with the appointment of Brian Caulfield and Andy McCue to the Camile board of directors.

McCue will take on the position of Non-Executive Chairman as part of the move. The company also plans to open up further locations in Ireland and abroad to be announced soon. Caulfield is a serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist and angel investor, well-known in the Irish investment community.

Camile Thai Kitchen added that McCue served as CEO of Paddy Power, where he led the business, embedding a new growth strategy which delivered record revenues and profits. McCue was the last Irish bookmaker’s chief executive in 2015, when he led the company through its merger with betting exchange Betfair. After Paddy Power he joined The Restaurant Group plc as CEO. McCue brings plenty to the table, as he was responsible for purchasing the iconic Wagamama business for The Restaurant Group, as well as his experience with tech focussed Paddy Power.

Brody Sweeney, founder and CEO of Camile, expressed his delight at both McCue and Caulfield joining the board: “We are really pleased to have attracted directors of the calibre of Brian and Andy to our board. It shows our serious ambitions for Camile Thai Kitchen and it’s future growth. I’m excited to officially welcome them both to our Camile Family.”

Speaking on his appointment Caulfield stated: “I am very excited at the opportunity to become a non-executive Director of the Camile board. As a Camile Thai Kitchen fan, it is amazing to see such a strong, and globally impactful company coming out of Dublin.”

McCue said: “Camile provides a very exciting tech-focussed hospitality business model and I look forward to being given the opportunity to help Camile grow further.”

Sweeney added: “2020 has been a milestone year for Camile Thai Kitchen. With many restaurants suffering the consequences of pandemic restrictions, we were very fortunate to see a 59 per cent increase in systems sales in the UK and a 40 per cent increase in Ireland. We owe this to our largely suburban, delivery focussed business model. This growth has enabled us to proceed ahead of time with our drone and robotics-focused tech strategy.”

Compostable packaging

Camile was the first takeaway restaurant chain in Europe to introduce compostable packaging, and features a low climate impact vegan menu, water-regulating Wok stations, and a number of new initiatives rolling out this year.

Since opening its first location in 2010, the business has expanded to 32 locations through a combination of company-owned and franchised restaurants. Expansion in London currently has been through six company-owned locations and one franchised unit.

The Camile franchising system has been well developed in Ireland and remains at the core of what they do, with single unit and multi-unit franchisees growing their businesses at a steady rate.

Camile franchise owner Rakesh Galaprishnan was working as a manager in the Camile Tooting Bec, London, location when he saw first hand the potential of running his own Camile Thai business. “It’s been an extremely busy first years.” said Rakesh. “With the support and guidance of the Camile Thai team, I feel well-equipped to continue my journey as a business owner.”

In late 2018, Rakesh took the keys to his first restaurant, and has since racked up high double digit like-for-like sales, strong gross profits and a dedicated restaurant team to deliver an amazing guest experience.

Food delivery market

On a broader scale, the food delivery market has exploded in the last five years, experiencing a 50 per cent growth over that time period. With food delivery set to exceed $164bn in the next four years, Camile is well positioned to take advantage of this trend.

They have built a custom online ordering system and native application from scratch to ensure ease of at home ordering and better data mining of their guests.

The branches run their own driver fleet, while also maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with industry leading aggregators. This two-tiered approach to delivery gives them a significant advantage over their competitors.

While market opportunity and timing are two elements to success, the importance of being a brand leader in a competitive market shouldn’t be underestimated.

The Camile Thai brand is a market leader, uniquely positioned as a sustainable, healthy Thai food outlet, providing calorie counts on all dishes and catering to diets of gluten free, dairy free and vegan customers.

With over 7,000 people attending Camile Thai’s free ‘Yoga in the Park’ events in 2019, their customer base is well established as health conscious, time-poor, and frequently engaged in online shopping.

At Camile Thai, prospective franchisees will find the opportunity to join a unique thriving food delivery brand with solid support in a booming market, and incredible opportunity for growth.

Camile Thai Kitchen thriving in a booming market

February 9, 2019

With 20 restaurants and counting, Camile Thai is thriving in its niche as a healthy online delivery restaurant.

With a food product that is perfectly tailored to holding its heat and quality during delivery, as well as providing high-end user experience, the brand is positioned well to reach its target market of time-poor, cuisine-curious young urban professionals.

Since opening in Dublin in 2011, the business has expanded substantially through a combination of company-owned and franchised restaurants. Now, having already opened company-owned restaurants in Tooting Bec, Clapham and Bermondsey, Camile Thai is looking to expand its franchise component in the London market.

The food delivery market has exploded in the last five years, experiencing a 50 per cent growth over that time period. In the last six months alone, the number of consumers ordering delivery has risen from 31 per cent to 36 per cent, with much of that focused on an urban professional segment.

With all of this growth, the food delivery sector lags well behind other delivery focused business types, suggesting more room for growth. A tremendous opportunity for expansion emerges for a food business as well set up for home delivery as Camile Thai.

While market opportunity is one element to success, standing out in a marketplace with increased competition is another. With that in mind, Camile Thai has built a brand that resonates strongly with its core target market. Camile Thai is uniquely positioned as a healthy hot Asian food brand, with calorie counts on all dishes as catering to diets of gluten free, dairy free and vegan customers.

Delivery logistics
Another key component of Camile Thai is their keen understanding of delivery logistics compared to many of their competitors. For many restaurant brands, the delivery market is an added bonus to their main business – a way to add incremental sales to their existing model.

For Camile Thai, home delivery has remained the focus since it was founded. Because of this, every subsequent innovation has focused on improving this area of the business.

In the past year, Camile Thai has introduced new compostable packaging that is developed to retain their food’s heat and quality, introduced new tools to measure delivery efficiency, and built a bespoke online ordering system and native application to ensure ease of at home ordering for the consumer and better data mining for its marketing purposes.

Camile Thai has consistently won awards for Best Thai and Healthiest Takeaway over the years within the Irish market. It now aims to expand that experiences farther across its London segment.

At Camile Thai, prospective franchisees will find the opportunity to join a unique thriving food delivery brand in a booming market with incredible opportunity for growth.
