Franchise agency chain bucks trend with more offices, more customers

January 8, 2019

Century 21 UK appears to have bucked the trend of closing offices and reduced footfall by marking the opening of 16 new offices across the country in the past 12 months.

It describes itself as “one of the fastest growing estate agency franchises in the UK” and says that 83 per cent of its offices reported increased business levels in 2018 compared to the previous year.

Century 21 UK – the national franchise for which is run by SDL Group – says the success secret is being able to offer diverse services to clients, including sales, lettings, estate and block management, surveying, auctions and mortgages in each branch, thus providing many income streams.

“In addition to new franchisees joining us, two of our offices were resold to two of our existing franchisees who wanted to expand in 2018 – one of the many benefits of being part of a franchise network” explains Chris Summers, head of franchising for SDL Group.

“2019 is expected to be just as busy, if not busier with a further 10 offices expected to open within the first quarter alone” he adds.

“Many of our offices are based in London, however, 2018 saw the start of many offices opening outside of the city and the surrounding area. Offices have opened in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, with a handful opening in the North and Midlands, such as Salford, Doncaster, Derby and Leicester.

New branches in Manchester and London as agencies defy market

November 13, 2018

A first-time agent who has previously owned a retail franchise and some buy to let units, has bought the Century 21 franchise for the Salford suburb of Manchester.

Abubakr Sehri has lived in Manchester for the last 17 years after moving to the UK in 2001.

“I’ve owned a franchise of the convenience retailer Londis for the past 13 years, but decided to venture into property five or six years ago. I went into buy to let and I now own four properties” he says.

“After working in retail for many years I wanted a change, and Century 21 UK was the best fit for me. Everything just fell into place.

“My aim is to bring the area of Salford together and offer my business expertise to local residents. I enjoy providing excellent service, so the concept of becoming a franchisee really attracted me as I will be able to focus all my attention and dedication into one branch.”

Meanwhile at the other end of the market and in London, high end operator Quintessentially Estates is opening its first bricks and mortar shop in London’s Belgravia.

Franchising firm slashes joining fee to just £1,000 to try and tempt struggling independents

May 19, 2018

Franchising business Century 21 UK is slashing its joining fee from £23,500 to £1,000.

The deal runs until the end of June.

Century 21, whose UK franchise is run by SDL Group, does not seem to need to cut its price to attract new franchisees.

It claims it has experienced “phenomenal” growth recently and is set to open 14 more branches.

However, the firm said it wants to attract smaller, independent agents who want to use the Century 21 brand.

Head of sales and development Chris Summers said: “We know that many bricks-and-mortar estate agents have suffered as a result of online-only firms entering the market.

Related: Century 21 UK strengthens presence in London

“The fact is that some are now really struggling and making losses is bad news for the property industry, so we thought it was a good time to launch our first offer of this kind.

“By joining forces with an established company like Century 21 UK, property professionals can give customers a wider choice of services, including auctions, surveying, estate management and mortgages, among others.

“As a franchisee, they continue to own their business and trade on their trusted reputation in the local area.”

The ‘Let your Business Blossom’ offer is open to existing sales and/or letting agents across the UK, subject to terms and conditions and VAT.
